Improving Your CBD Experience With Omega-3

At, we are all about helping you get the absolute best experience out of your Cannabidiol (CBD). To that end, we like to present you with guides, tips, and tricks for using CBD, making your own CBD products, and knowing what types of CBD are best for which purposes. One of the things that we feel is often overlooked by other CBD providers is the fact that CBD products and the effect they have on your body can be significantly influenced by the food you eat, especially the food you eat in tandem with taking your CBD.

Perhaps the best way to maximize the potency of your CBD is to take it alongside a diet that is high in Omega-3 fatty acids. But just what are Omega-3 fatty acids, what foods contain them, and just why are they so helpful? In this article, we will answer all of those questions and present you with a few CBD products that go hand-in-hand with these types of foods.

What are Omega-3 Fatty Acids?

Omega-3 fatty acids, often just called Omega-3, are nutrients derived from certain foods that help your body function and rebuild in a healthy way. Every cell you have in your body requires Omega-3s to operate, and your lungs, heart, eyes, immune system, endocrine system, and blood vessels all use Omega-3s as an energy source. Primary Omega-3 fatty acids, such as DHA and EPA, are typically found in fish, while ALA is found in many nuts and seeds. We will go over the foods that contain Omega-3 fatty acids in a little bit.

How Many Omega-3s Do You Need?

For now, the only omega-3 that has an official recommendation is Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) which, for the average man, comes out to 1.6 g, and for the average woman is 1.1 grams. Those women who are breastfeeding or pregnant will require more.  In the United States, most people are able to get an adequate amount of ALA. A deficiency in omega-3s can lead to a rash of rough and red scaly skin, as well as a number of internal issues.

Your body cannot make ALA, so you have to get it from the foods you eat. However, your body is able to take the ALA and convert it into other omega-3s such as EPA and DHA in small amounts.

What Foods Provide You With Omega-3s?

While there are a ton of supplements, such as fish oil, that people use to augment their levels of omega-3s, eating a diverse diet is also able to provide you with a significant amount of these essential fatty acids. Nuts and seeds, like flaxseed, chia seed, and walnuts, are a great source of omega-3. Eggs, yogurts, juices, milk, and soybean oil are also great ways to increase your omega-3 levels quickly. Perhaps the best way to increase the level of omega-3s in your body is to eat a variety of seafood (especially fatty fish found in cold water) such as sardines, salmon, tuna, mackerel, and many others.

Many people will augment their typical diet with supplements (such as fish oil, krill oil, cod liver oil, and algal oil) that enhance their natural levels of omega-3s, and there is a wide array of purported benefits that come from increasing your omega-3 levels to higher levels.

The Health Benefits of Omega-3

Omega-3 has been heavily studied, and there have been many studies that point to these compounds being highly beneficial for several issues.

Cardiovascular Disease

Cardiovascular disease and its relation to Omega-3 consumption has been heavily looked into. Meta-analyses (1, 2) have shown that higher dietary levels of omega-3s have been associated with a lower risk of heart failure, coronary disease, and fatal coronary heart disease. The American Heart Association (AHA) has recommended fish oils as a way to reduce cardiovascular events in people who already have cardiovascular disease.

For a while, there were conflicting studies, with some showing beneficial results related to heart health, and others showing no significant changes with the use of fish oils high in omega-3s. Recent findings have shown that this discrepancy likely results from the dosage being given, and we now believe that the higher the dose of omega-3s, the greater the risk reduction.

Cancer Prevention

There have been mixed findings regarding cancer prevention and the intake of Omega-3s, and much of the discrepancy seems to be the result of cancer site variation, gender and age. Studies (1, 2) have shown that higher intakes of omega-3s are associated with a lower risk of breast cancer but future clinical trials are still needed to confirm many of these findings. Fish consumption has also been shown to slightly reduce colorectal cancer risk.

Cognitive Function

Diets with large amounts of fish high in LC omega-3s have been associated with a reduced risk of cognitive decline in older men. A great deal of research has looked into the relationship between these fatty acids, Alzheimer’s disease, and dementia. It is theorized that omega-3s can help protect cognitive function by maintaining “neuronal function and cell- membrane integrity within the brain.” In one study, a higher fish consumption was associated with a 60% lower risk of dementia and a 70% lower risk of Alzheimer’s disease over an average of multiple years.

Eye Health

Omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to be beneficial for overall eye health, including being effective in reducing the symptoms of dry eye syndrome. According to some experts, a high intake of DHA is able to help reduce the effects of age-related vision loss.

Other Conditions

Other studies have shown that omega-3s can help benefit those with depression, ADHD, inflammatory bowel disease, cystic fibrosis, and childhood allergies, and a series of other conditions.

How CBD and Omega-3 Work Together

In a large amount of CBD products, CBD is infused into a carrier oil that is rich in omega-3s (like olive oil or hemp oil). While these oils do a great job of helping to contain and deliver CBD, they may also augment and increase the efficacy of the CBD they carry. Experts have begun to believe that omega-3s are able to provide support and enhance the benefits CBD products can deliver to various areas of the body.

To understand how these compounds can work together synergistically, you need to have a basic understanding of the endocannabinoid system.

The Endocannabinoid System

The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a system in the body that regulates a large amount of essential bodily functions, including pain, mood, metabolism, appetite, memory, and many more. Through this system, CBD is able to provide the many benefits that we use it for

The ECS operates through the relationship of enzymes, endocannabinoids, and receptors. The enzymes synthesize and convert into cannabinoids, and these cannabinoids, in turn, communicate with receptors located throughout the body in order to dictate bodily functions.

Various cannabinoids will have different effects from one another within the ECS. Cannabidiol and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) are both cannabinoids though they each have very different effects on the body through their interaction with the ECS.

Our understanding of the ECS and how various cannabinoids interact with it is still young, and we are constantly gaining new insights into this complex system.

Endocannabinoids, meaning the cannabinoids naturally produced within our body, are lipid-based (composed of fatty acids like omega-3). Some studies have shown that diets that are low in omega-3s will actually disrupt how our endocannabinoid system functions and diets rich in omega-3s will help promote the functioning of the ECS. The thought is that omega-3 is integral to anchoring endocannabinoid cell membrane receptors.

CBD and Omega-3: Working Together

CBD works by interacting with the endocannabinoid system, and omega-3s are critical for endocannabinoid creation and the overall functioning of the ECS. This means that taking omega-3s in tandem will ensure that your ECS is operating at peak condition when it comes time to process the CBD.

Fatty acids like omega-3 taken with CBD are assumed to improve therapeutic benefits occurring within the ECS and your overall health.

If you are deficient in omega-3s, your CBD will have to work harder, and you will need a larger dose to obtain the same beneficial effects. Conversely, if your diet is rich in omega-3s, your CBD will have a much easier time providing you wellness benefits. This can include such therapeutic effects as pain relief, anxiety relief, anti-inflammatory effects, anti-seizure effects, insomnia relief, and many more.

Eating a diet rich in omega-3s and consuming full-spectrum CBD will help you gain the maximum benefits. If you are in need of powerful relief, this is a method you should strongly consider. The full-spectrum CBD offers the added benefit of the entourage effect, allowing all the cannabinoids involved to reach their maximum potential.
