FDA Will Use Reddit to Determine Safety of Delta-8 and CBD

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recently announced that it plans to begin using Reddit and other various “novel” sources of data to better understand the public health issues posed by CBD and other Cannabis products like Delta-8, which are growing in popularity.

The initiative is called the Cannabis Derived Products Data Acceleration Plan (CDP), and it is an effort by the FDA to get viable real-time data on Cannabis products so that “the Agency can deploy its limited resources quickly and effectively.” The CDP appears to be in response to the fact that the Cannabis industry, with products like Delta-8, is evolving and growing faster than the FDA can monitor and regulate. The FDA seems to see a need to update its methods in order to keep up with consumer trends. Described as a “suite of modern, flexible tools and processes,” these new methods include looking at Reddit and consumer reviews to “identify safety issues and adverse events.”

How the FDA is Changing its Methods

The FDA’s slow response time being an issue is not something new, but they seem to realize now that something needs to change when it comes to the Cannabis industry. The FDA is attempting to create a new framework for real-time evaluation that includes several new approaches. The goals of this initiative include:

  • Starting a process that allows them to understand better how safety misinformation may create vulnerabilities
  • Identify products to prioritize for enforcement via automated processes.
  • Creation of better, faster surveillance tools for monitoring trends of cannabinoids like Delta-8 THC and Delta-10 THC.
  • A closer examination of Certificate Of Authenticity data to identify inconsistencies and quality issues.
  • And, as we said before, the use of “novel” sources like Reddit to get data on adverse events.

The Cannabis-Derived Products Data Acceleration Plan is described as a “portfolio of pilot initiatives and partnerships focused on advancing data-driven safety signal detection.” and so far is relatively vague on how exactly these goals will be met. It seems at this stage they are simply acknowledging the issues and attempting to point out areas that need their direct attention. How the Cannabis Derived Products Data Acceleration Plan will affect their day-to-day operations remains to be seen.

When it comes to the fact that the FDA will be taking in information via social media, many in the Cannabis industry can’t help but roll their eyes a bit at this proclamation. People have touted the benefits of CBD, THC, and Delta-8 products for years on sites like Reddit, but most of these claims were ignored as anecdotal evidence with little scientific backing. Yet, now, in an effort to regulate and control CBD and Delta-8, the FDA has decided that anecdotal evidence will now be permitted as part of their decision-making process. You can’t help but wonder how much faster we would have had legal medical marijuana and CBD should this standard have been applied twenty years ago.

The fact that the FDA specified that sites like Reddit would only be used to gather data on “adverse events” seems to demonstrate that they are still not going to be considering the thousands of positive stories, which are the majority of stories regarding Cannabis products online, but will only be looking at these sites in order to identify where adverse effects can be found. It seems as if they will be treating positive stories as possible misinformation, and negative ones as legitimate signs of problems that need examination.

How Delta-8 is Driving the FDA Changes

This is not exactly a surprising move for those who have been following the ongoing issues with Delta-8 regulations. Delta-8 has been causing panic across the country, and many states have felt the need to create local regulations against its use. The issue is that current federal regulatory guidelines were designed to allow hemp products to be produced and used, while simultaneously seeking to ban Cannabis products with high THC levels capable of causing psychoactive effects. However, newer extraction methods have allowed companies to source Delta-8 THC (which has many of the same psychoactive properties as traditional Delta-9 THC) from hemp, effectively circumventing the law and taking advantage of a loophole in the current federal guidelines.

There are also other cannabinoids like Delta-10 that are very similar to Delta-8 and are quickly gaining popularity. These new cannabinoid products will be looking to take advantage of these same loopholes and the FDA has seemed to realize that the glacial pace with which they conduct research and make changes to guidelines is unable to keep pace with a fast-moving and ever-changing industry.

The CDP is clearly their acknowledgment that their current methods employed by the FDA  are simply not adequate to protect consumers in the ways in which they wish to. However, it remains to be seen if their attempt to use Reddit and other “novel” sources will assist them in making better decisions, or just in making poorer choices faster.

Delta-8 is Something You Should Try for Yourself

With new laws and regulations on the horizon, it may be time to get Delta-8 while you still can. While there has been a great deal of fear-mongering about the product, it has actually proven to be an effective way to help those going through chemotherapy, as well as providing several other wellness benefits. The way many media sources talk about Delta-8 is reminiscent of the old Reefer Madness era, and much of it has been funded by competing interests.
