Can CBD Ruin a Drug Test for Me?

Cannabidiol (CBD) has become an immensely popular product over the last few years. You can find it being sold in online shops and stores around the country, and we can hardly go a week without some new exciting product like CBD gummies or shampoo being released. The same goes for science on the topic, as countless studies are being done each year exploring the medicinal and wellness qualities of Cannabidiol.

All that being said, there is still a significant knowledge gap when it comes to CBD and the general population. One of the most common questions we receive at is whether using Cannabidiol will cause you to fail a drug test.

The answer is not as straightforward as you may think. In this article, we will briefly break down some basic Cannabidiol facts and explore the realities of CBD and our modern drug tests. By the end, you should have a much better idea of how CBD functions within your system and whether or not you should worry about taking a drug test if you are a regular CBD user.

What is Cannabidiol?

Before we talk about CBD and drug tests, we must have a basic understanding of the compound. CBD is one of the hundreds of cannabinoids contained within the Cannabis plant. While it is found in Marijuana, most CBD is derived from hemp and will not cause the same psychoactive (the mind-altering ‘high’) effects found in THC.  CBD is often isolated in order to create CBD oil, which is then added to a wide variety of products.

Understanding CBD and Drug Tests

Drug Tests Do Not Look for CBD

The most common drug test used by US-based businesses is the basic 5-panel drug test. While there are more advanced variations that look for other drugs, this is the one that is most relevant to our discussion. This standard test is made to look for:

  • Opiates
  • PCP
  • Amphetamines/Methamphetamines
  • Cocaine
  • Marijuana

CBD will not cause you to fail a drug test, but poorly made CBD products may have traces of other compounds that can cause a false positive for Marijuana. You must ensure you are buying pure products.

While CBD derived from hemp was made legal in the 2018 Farm Bill, many of our institutions and testing practices have been slow to catch up to this reality. In rare cases, CBD has caused a test to shows positives for THC -though not actually due to the CBD in the product.

According to Consumer Reports, products containing CBN (a cousin to CBD and found in multiple sleep aids) have been found in various CBD products and have caused people in the past to actually fail their drug tests. There have also been situations where a Cannabidiol product has caused a test to detect trace amounts of THC. But why is this?

There is the possibility that the company you buy your CBD from is not as good at purifying and isolating the oils as their labels may claim. Much of that comes down to the quality of their extraction process. If the Cannabidiol oils you use are not entirely pure, there is a good chance a test will find trace amounts of THC and CBN, which can cause you not to pass a drug test. Even if they are very nearly pure, it is possible that this THC can build up in your system over time.

The Problem is not Cannabidiol, but impure products.

Pay Close Attention to Where you Get Your CBD.

If a CBD company does everything correctly and gets their oil from hemp that was grown to match all state and federal requirements, it is nearly impossible for you to ingest enough Cannabidiol Oil for it to appear on a drug test.

There are a number of companies that will fail to meet these standards, however. Some studies have found that roughly 1 in 5 CBD companies were releasing products with THC levels that may have been high enough to cause issues with drug tests. This means you need to be extra careful about which brands you choose to trust.

Look for manufacturers that can give you a Certificate of Analysis (COA) which will show the results of a brand testing for various contaminants, including THC. While a COA is not always perfect, it is the best you can currently expect and demonstrates that a brand takes its quality controls seriously.

What do You do if You Fail a Drug Test Due to Cannabidiol?

If, for some reason, you do fail a drug test because of faulty CBD labeling, there are a few options you still have.

Speak Directly With Your Employer

This is pretty obvious, but you will want to be upfront with them about why you think you may have failed the test. In the past, employees have been able to fight these results by getting and presenting documentation from their doctor justifying their use of Cannabidiol. Make sure you can also explain why this product may have led to a failed test (the information in this article is a good start). The more official paperwork you can procure, the more of a case you will be able to make. Your purchase records of a CBD product, as well as a Doctor’s note, is much better than showing up empty-handed.

Then Move on to the HR Department

If your case is falling on deaf ears, you should then approach your companies HR department. It is possible with the help of your doctor for you to seek protection through the Americans with Disabilities Act (as well as similar state laws). If you have documented justifications for needing CBD, it is likely you will be able to get exceptions to account for these medical needs.

Remember Cannabidiol is a viable solution for a number of ailments, including insomnia, chronic pain, and even anxiety. Plan ahead and try and make sure your doctor has documented some of these issues if you plan to take CBD and want to avoid any misunderstandings.

There are several legal resources available to help you fight the ramifications of a false positive.
